Volcanoes National Park

Home of the mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, volcano hikes, and Rwanda's most powerful conservation story.

Located in northern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa's most iconic wildlife destinations and one of the world's best places to experience mountain gorilla trekking.

The park is part of the greater Virunga Massif, spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its bamboo forests, rainforest, and dormant volcanoes create a dramatic setting for unforgettable wildlife encounters.

Gorilla Trekking Experience

Gorilla trekking begins early at the park headquarters in Kinigi, where guests receive a briefing before entering the forest with experienced rangers and guides. Treks can last from one hour to several hours depending on where the gorilla family is located.

Once the gorillas are found, visitors spend one memorable hour watching them feed, play, rest, and interact within their family group. Many travelers describe the encounter as one of the most powerful wildlife experiences on earth.

Golden Monkeys and Culture

Golden monkey trekking takes visitors into bamboo forest where these playful endangered primates leap through the trees and feed on bamboo shoots. The activity is often lighter than gorilla trekking and works well as a second primate experience.

Around the park, community visits introduce travelers to Rwandan music, dance, storytelling, and conservation-linked livelihoods.

Volcano Hikes and Dian Fossey

Adventurous travelers can hike volcanic peaks such as Mount Bisoke, where a crater lake rewards the climb. The park is also linked to Dian Fossey's gorilla conservation legacy through the Karisoke Research Center area between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.

A hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb gives visitors a deeper understanding of mountain gorilla conservation and the people who helped protect these animals.

A Guide's Perspective

Every trek feels different. The cool mist, bamboo forest, tracker signals, and first glimpse of a silverback or a mother with her baby create a quiet, humbling moment that stays with guests long after the one-hour visit ends.
